Air Freight vs. Sea Freight from Pakistan: Transit Time, Volume & Cost Analysis

How to choose between Air Cargo and Ocean Freight (FCL/LCL) when shipping goods from Pakistan to Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia.

Authored by: Fly Air Logistics Cargo Planning

Choosing the optimal transit mode between air freight and sea freight is one of the most critical supply chain decisions for Pakistani traders. The decision directly balances inventory holding costs, client delivery deadlines, product shelf-life, and cargo transportation budgets.

1. Transit Time Comparison: From Pakistan to Key Global Hubs

When calculating shipping velocity from Lahore or Karachi, transit times differ substantially:

Destination RegionAir Freight (Direct / Transshipment)Ocean Freight (Direct / Feeder)
Middle East (Dubai / Jebel Ali / Riyadh)1 – 3 Days4 – 7 Days
United Kingdom & EU (London / Frankfurt / Rotterdam)3 – 5 Days22 – 30 Days
North America (New York / Los Angeles / Toronto)4 – 7 Days32 – 45 Days
Far East (Shanghai / Singapore / Tokyo)2 – 5 Days14 – 24 Days

For fashion apparel with seasonal launch dates, urgent replacement machinery parts, or temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical shipments, air freight represents the only viable path. For bulk cotton yarn, heavy hardware, furniture, or volume commodities, sea freight remains the unchallenged economic standard.

2. Understanding Chargeable Weight vs. Volume (CBM)

Freight forwarders do not calculate costs solely on gross weight. Both modes apply volume-to-weight ratios to prevent light, bulky cargo from occupying disproportionate vessel or aircraft capacity.

Air Freight Volumetric Calculation

In air transportation, standard IATA dimensional weight is calculated using the formula:

$$\text{Volumetric Weight (kg)} = \frac{\text{Length (cm)} \times \text{Width (cm)} \times \text{Height (cm)}}{6000}$$

The airline charges based on whichever is higher: Actual Gross Weight or Volumetric Weight.

Sea Freight (CBM & Revenue Tons)

  • FCL (Full Container Load): You pay a flat container rate for a 20ft (approx. 28–32 CBM usable volume) or 40ft High Cube (approx. 68–76 CBM usable volume) box regardless of cargo weight, subject to maximum highway and container payload limits (typically 21–26 metric tons).
  • LCL (Less than Container Load): For shipments between 1 CBM and 15 CBM, forwarders pool your cargo with other shippers. Pricing is assessed per Revenue Ton (w/m), where 1 CBM = 1,000 kg.

3. When Should You Choose Air Freight?

  • Urgent Delivery Deadlines: Letter of Credit (L/C) expiration or strict penalty-backed buyer purchase orders.
  • High Value-to-Weight Ratio: Precision surgical tools, electronics, designer garments, leather accessories, and gems.
  • Perishable Cargo: Fresh mangoes, seasonal citrus (Kinnow), fresh meat, and frozen seafood requiring active temperature management.
  • Smaller Consignments: Typically shipments under 300 kg where sea freight minimum handling charges (BL fee, origin terminal charges, deconsolidation) offset sea savings.

4. When Should You Choose Sea Freight?

  • High-Volume Manufacturing: Heavy industrial raw materials, textiles, building materials, and auto parts.
  • Predictable Supply Chains: Scheduled monthly restocks where inventory transit pipelines are planned 4 to 6 weeks in advance.
  • Hazardous or Oversized Cargo: Oversized plant machinery, drums of chemicals, or heavy project cargo that cannot fit onto standard aircraft lower-deck or main-deck pallets.

5. The Hybrid Alternative: Sea-Air Freight Consolidation

Fly Air Logistics provides customized multimodal solutions. Cargo is moved via express feeder vessel from Karachi to regional hubs in the UAE (Jebel Ali / Dubai World Central), then transferred onto wide-body air cargo freighters flying directly into European or North American destinations. This approach delivers:

  • Up to 50% faster transit compared to pure ocean freight.
  • Up to 40% cost reduction compared to pure air freight.
